Patient Information

Treatment decisions for breast cancers and lesions implying increased breast cancer risk (premalignant lesions) are highly dependent on often subtle and occasionally rare elements. Many women receive second opinions for treatment decisions, and these can often be facilitated and clarified with a second review of the pathologic evidence that is the basis of such decisions.

Errors in overdiagnosis of cancer (particularly of minimal lesions found with mild mammographic changes and small needle biopsies) do occur. Second review of these elements before definitive therapy can be helpful in order to clarify the various teatment options available. National organizations, such as the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute, have included recommendation of pathology review before final theraputic decision-making, particularly for the non-invasive lesions of ductal carcinoma in situ and lobular carcinoma in situ. Of course, the second opinion is usually of help in confirmation of diagnosis initially provided by a pathologist, assuring that a planned upon approach is a reasonable choice.
